To the works chemist, intimately acquainted with the details of a particular industry, they often appear superficial and elementary; to the student of chemistry they lack the imaginative appeal which is found in works on the pure sciences; to the chemical engineer, concerned primarily with the quantitative aspects of physical and chemical processes, they usually offer a qualitative and unbalanced olla podrida of engineering, chemistry and economics which is peculiarly irritating.
